Years 14 to 18: Senior Class

This age group is called the Trust, Self-Expression, and Contribution Stage. It is also characterized by analytical thought and a growing awareness of commitment and responsibility.

 

This stage of development can be compared to the earliest developmental stage, in that children undergo many changes, both physically and psychologically. At this stage, children are more likely to sleep late and have lower energy. They have developed logical thinking, but do not necessarily like to learn facts. Students in this stage learn best when the academic work is linked to real-life skills such as cooking, gardening, sewing, repair work, etc.

 

They have a strong need for independence but also desire to live and work harmoniously with society. During this time, young people are trying to find their place in the world and what their contribution can and should be. Topics that are relevant for life after school become of great importance to the students in this developmental stage as they prepare for life on their own.

Our high school is based on the same principles as the primary school and utilizes a blended curriculum together with an international online program, allowing each student to work at their own pace and receive individual attention. The online exercises on the IXL platform are designed to promote critical thinking (instead of rote learning or regurgitation of information). This is excellent preparation for the GED (General Education Diploma. Students can start preparing for the GED from as early as 16 years of age, enabling them to write their exams by 17 years or when they choose. 

 

The GED® program is the only higher secondary certificate available in over 85 countries and is accepted by nearly all universities in the U.S. and many more across the world. It is recognized as an NQF level 4 qualification by SAQA (South African Quality Authority).
